In Fiix, barcodes are created outside the CMMS, then added to each asset on the asset details page (unlike QR codes, which are generated and assigned automatically by the system).
Before you can add barcode details to an asset, you need to let the CMMS know what barcode format you're using. These barcode formats are assigned to asset categories.
So to configure barcodes, first you assign the barcode format to the asset category, then you can add barcodes to assets.
In this article:
Assign barcode format to the asset category
The system needs to know what kind of barcode it's scanning. To set this up, you assign the barcode format to asset categories before assigning barcodes to assets.
To assign a barcode format to an asset category:
- Navigate to Settings > CMMS Settings.
- Click the Asset Categories tab.
- Click the asset category to assign the barcode to, like Equipment or Parts & Supplies (or click Add to add a new asset category):
- In the Asset Category window, click the Barcode Format To Use for Category Assets dropdown:
-
Click the barcode format that matches your barcode type:
Note
If you're not sure what your barcode type is (also called symbology), you can do a visual comparison or use a barcode identifier like OrcaScan.
Codabar-type barcodes are listed as "Support on Android only" as iOS and iPadOS need third-party scanning apps to scan these types of barcodes.
- To apply the barcode to the asset category and all its children, check the Apply barcode selection to all child categories within this category when the form saves checkbox. This will apply the barcode format to the asset category and all the categories considered "under" the category in the hierarchy (e.g. Locations and Facilities' children include Buildings, Inventory and Storage, and Plants):
- Click OK.
- Click Save.
Assign a barcode to an asset
Once you've added the barcode format to the asset category, then you can assign barcodes to assets in that category. The manual process is shown here, but you can also use the bulk import function to add barcodes in bulk by uploading a spreadsheet with all the barcodes.
- Navigate to Assets > All assets and select the asset to add a barcode to.
- Under the General tab, add barcode details to the Barcode field. The system allows for letters and numbers, so the barcode needs to be typed in:
- Click Save.
