Create equipment categories

Equipment categories allow you to define what type of equipment each record represents. This can be helpful in filtering equipment, because you can view equipment in a single category.

Further, an equipment’s category also controls what type of barcode it uses. This means that to use a barcode for a piece of equipment, you must assign it to an equipment category. 

To create an equipment category:

1. In Assets > Equipment, click Settings:
   
2. Click Equipment Categories:
   
3. Click Create:
   
4. In the Name field, enter a name for the equipment category.
5. If the new category is a child of an existing category (e.g. a new “Trucks” category that’s a child of a “Vehicles” category), select the parent category in the Parent field.
6. If you want to use barcodes for equipment in this category, select a barcode type:
   
   
   

   Note

   To use barcodes for equipment, you’ll also need to set up the barcode in the equipment record. To learn how, see Edit equipment details. To learn about the barcode formats we support, see Supported barcode formats.

7. Click Save.
